A coding scheme was used to explore the dynamics of email discussions in a design team who used it for decision making support. Findings suggest that discussions display similar group task activities but few group-centered strategies seen in face to face meetings; and that verbal devices may serve a different function when used in email discussions.The role of the discussion leader is raised.
