Project Summary |
Kinetic Typography
Text is no longer limited to static forms in digital communication. Typographic form can change in size, color, or position in order to better express its content. This research has been motivated by numerous examples of expressive typography created for print media. The history of typography has shown that careful treatment of typography can enrich written languages by adding various expressive qualities, such as emotion, tone-of-voice. We envision that an additional dimension of time will further enrich the communicative power of typography. However, the field of visual design still lacks in-depth
understandings of "kinetic typography." Although animated text has been
used in recent TV commercials and music televisions,
the potential of kinetic typography as written language has not been fully
explored. We believe that it is important to study design issues around
time-varying typographic forms.

Examples |
Suppose it is early Saturday morning. The actor - perhaps a child or
puppy - hurries to the door, eager to play outside. One speaker
on the left finds sunshine; the other, rain. ... In this assignment,
students explored how kinetic typography can convey two slightly
different senses of the same text.
